Iowa Urban Homestead

Awe WELCOME here you'll learn bunches here. What a cool mix of hens you have. Can't wait till you get those pretty eggs. They are loved way more than I realized when I got mine 2 years ago. We also have a preserver group on here too. I too "put by food" have just started my first waterglassing and dehydrating eggs this year. What a great time to learn all these things for you all. I live next door in SW Neb. good ol corn country. I scored some wheat and planted it in my grazing boxes, they love them. Enjoy your girls.
I bout some black sunflower sprouts and wheat sprout to cover crop our beds this year so the girls will get some fresh greens this fall, but I love the idea of planting them a lettuce bar. I started canning this year, but I’ve been reading up on water glassing and I am definitely going to try that once we start getting eggs in regularly 😊

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies!
Thank you, I was already reading away last night 😳 I was already a part of a couple local facebook groups, but a lot of the posts contradict themselves, or the people in the comments can’t agree on what should or shouldn't be done, and it doesn't seem like anyone monitors to make sure accurate information is given so I’m kind of excited to find all these articles.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us:ya

growing and preserving your own food is a wonderful thing. So is cooking from scratch. There are many of us who do that.
It’s been so fun to learn but it makes me sad that so much of the knowledge is lost. Both my grandmother’s passed away when I was little and my mom had no interest in learning so everything they new ended with then. I started buying books and collecting supplies so I could teach myself. Sourdough was the easiest for me in the bread family for some reason. Then I moved into pickling everything 🤣 but quickly moved into jams, jellies and marinades. Last weekend I made pizza and pasta sauce and it was phenomenal.

I got everything to learn fermenting but I am still in the research phases of that.

Youtube has been my BFF lol

There are baker's threads, recipe threads, home preserving threads and many more out here. I have two hot water bath canners, two pressure canners, a steam juicer and two dehydrators. Wish I could afford a freeze dryer.

I have been looking at the freeze dryers too! I dehydrate alot. My husband and kids love the fruit leathers and jerkies, but I would love a freeze dryer. We are doing solar this year so I can’t justify buying a freeze dryer also, but I definitely think it would be worth the expense with all the food you could put up with it.
