Iowa Urban Homestead

Joining BYC as soon as you discovered it proves what I've always known: We Iowans are SMART folks!

It sounds like you're well on your way to some beautiful baskets of pretty eggs. Hope your garden did better than mine this year; weird weather took its toll up north.

Welcome to BYC; there's plenty to learn and explore here, and I hope you enjoy it all!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We purchased six day old chicks back in February for a May delivery. We lost one in transit and picked up a Blue Cochin baby from Theisen’s to make up our six allowance.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? We currently have six 17 week olds
(3) What breeds do you have? We have a Black Copper Maran, Blue Cochin, Partridge Olive Egger, Easter Egger, Super Blue Egger, and a Cuckoo Bluebar

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? So far the little cuddly butts are not laying so right now the best part is all the free compost!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? We have a massive garden, and I am learning different preservation methods for storing all our delicious food coming in. I also started making bread and cooking more from scratch this year.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I live in Iowa with my husband and three kids (18, 16, and 13) We have 3 dogs (Bulldog, St Bernard and Rottweiler) and 4 cats we rescued over the years.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D I just found BYC today, joined immediately and cannot wait to see what it has to offer 😁
Welcome to BYC!! :)
