Irrational fear!

While I agree that over use of hand sanitizer is not beneficial (just as over use of antibiotics causes both resistant bacteria strains and can destroy your digestive system's beneficial bacteria populations), using it when appropriate, e.g. when I come in the house from handling chickens and chicken things, helps prevent spreading salmonella all over anything I might touch before making it to a sink to actually wash my hands.

And yes, Salmonella mostly affects the very young, very old, or others with weak immune systems. That's why I'm usually very careful to remember to wash/sanitize my hands post bird. Like, one of my best friends is at risk rn because of the meds he is on to treat some health issues; I don't want to get him sick. Our roommate has a baby niece rn; I don't want him to accidentally get her sick. My fiance works at a grocery store in the produce section; I don't want him to get anyone sick.

It is not crazy to want to protect you and yours from illness, especially if you have cause for concern.

Nah, pure fallacy...that most folks believe..... sells a lot of the stuff tho
That stuff is nothing more than alcohol, which will most likely not kill salmonella or many other organisms.

The only way from spreading contaminants on your hands to other surfaces is to clean them off with good old plain soap, vigorously rubbing all surfaces of hands and fingers against one another and rinsing with lots of water.

They help to reduce the amount of bacteria on your hands. Alcohol does in fact kill salmonella; it poisons most bacteria that I know of, just like it poisons people in large enough quantities. It won't totally prevent an infection, but the cdc recommends the use of hand sanitizer when soap and running water is not immediately available. They also recommend washing your hands as soon as possible, but it does help or they wouldn't recommend using it at all. Here's a link to their page on the subject: http://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/diseases/salmonella.html

We drink raw milk from our goats, and eat "home-grown" eggs from friends all the time, and we've never been sick. We drink smoothies with raw eggs in them, too. They are delicious and creamy. :) We've only ever gotten food poisoning from eating out. In fact, we've been sick less often since eating raw eggs and milk than we ever were on supposedly "healthy" products from the store.

Personally, i feel that humans have weaker immune systems than we used to have, because our food and the way we live is so sterilized now. Like my gramma used to always tell me, a little dirt don't hurt!

I define irrational fear as fearing something that cannot happen, like drowning in the Atlantic Ocean while skiing in Colorado...not going to happen...

Under the most inhumane conditions allowed in commercial egg farming, perhaps 1 in a million will have salmonella issues.

Proper backyard husbandry reduces this number significantly.

Cooking eggs thoroughly, even more so.

That said,

Do you handle money??

Do you know what's on that money?

Will you fear and stop handling money if you knew?

Many things in life you just have to accept and deal with accordingly...

The only time I use hand sanitizers is when I am a cashier at work. I have seen people stand in front of me, that were obviously very ill, sneeze or cough into their hand, not wipe their hands, and then give me their money with the same hand. I will clean my hands after each transaction that involves paper money, even when it is not cold season. I refuse to run a register without a bottle of hand sanitizer to use.

But, I agree, good old soap and water are a better idea.

Thanks all! I started cooking our eggs! (Scrambled) and so far we are all doing fine! :). Now I need to take the plunge and fry them up over easy!!!!!
