This is exactly why I feed All Flock, with oyster shell on the side. I do not use layer feed. I have chicks I've hatched in the flock as soon as I can integrate them after 5 weeks of age... so they all mingle when youngters are 7 weeks old. Chicks hatched by hens are in the flock from about day 3, raised by their mommas. Plus there are ducks and geese in my flock. Hence the "All Flock" feed.I had to put my 14 wk pullets in with my year old hens. They seem to get along since the run and coop are large enough. I tried to keep two feeds going as they naturally stick to their own age groups but a few little ones keep going to the layer feed. Should I stop feeding layer all together then? with oyster shell on side?
I TRIED separate feeds once. Too much trouble for ME just filling different feeders with different feed. Didn't matter; adults wanted the chick feed and the chicks didn't care which feeder they managed to find. It wouldn't hurt the adults to eat chick starter or grower, but it DOES harm chicks eating layer feed.
If you have layer feed left, use it up by trying to fill only one feeder with it where mostly the layers congregate. The senior gals will tend to keep the youngsters away (which is why you provide multiple feeders anyway, so nobody gets blocked from food!) so chances are the youngsters will be eating at other feeders with an all flock formula.
