when our border collie was younger(about 4-6 months old) she liked to "play" with the goslings we had in a little uncovered run in our yard. As the fence was only a foot tall she could easily get in. As we finally got sick of her killing our goslings we decied to let the adults adopt them( as adut geese tend to love being parents) It did not take her long to realize that the goslings are not toys. Today almost two years later, she still refuses to get close to the geese and doesn't bother the goslings whether they are with their parents or in our run.

Yeah you would need a fence though. Our geese are allowed to roam around the yard during the day, but if not watched they like to play in the puddles on the road, walk along the road to the neighbors house, or go out back behind our home in our fields.

Our border collie can not get in our coop but we let our geese out in the yard to play and that is when our border collie
gets them.

I have one pet goose, that runs free, stay within 1/2 A without a fence. Those little dogs wouldnt do well attacking a full grown goose. Now a terrier may kill a goose. So yes a goose would protect them from those dogs, but NOT all dogs.


Saw my pet goose chasing a cottontail rabbit across my yard. Guess it got to near her nest. That was one funny site.

Thanks for all the replies. Our three acres is big, but the neighbors happen to live close to the edge where the coop is located. That is where the shih-tzu's come over at. And then the proceed to meander all over our property before heading for home. I took a huge tree limb out there yesterday and scared them off. The next time they saw me, they ran. I don't think a fence is in our future, so maybe geese aren't for us. Anybody know if you have to pen up turkeys as well? We just want some for Thanksgiving

I hope nobody takes offense to that.
