Is a heat lamp absolutly necessary?

I got one of those adjustable lizard lamps too. I used my old dog crate as a brooder so there was not a lot of room to move the light up and down to adjust the temp.
Right now they are outside with a 100W red flood light in the outdoor brooder/coop. When they were inside I used a 75W black light. The reptile heat lamp that I had only lasted 10 days before it burned out.

I also bought a 100W heat lamp for lizards at the pet store. Since I am keeping the chicks in a bathroom, I didn't want them to get too hot and 250W seemed like overkill. The 100W bulb has worked very well for us and our four chicks. If I were raising more, a larger bulb capable of covering more space would be better.

I've been using a ceramic heat emittor. I like how it doesn't produce any light, but warms up nicely. My babies get light from the bay windows and a little pink night light. I was hoping that the more natural photo periods would be less stressful than a light on 24/7. So far, everyone seems ok with it.
