If so, why are they called pekins? Just curious. I was on a site about pekin bantams. However it didn't go into why they are called pekins. Anyone know why?

I am not 100% sure but I think its because they are from Pekin China. In my opinion they should be treated as a seperate breed than the largefowl cochins, when you look at them their type is so different. The large cochins will never be able to look like the bantam cochins.

That's what I thought but just wanted to check. I'll take the bantams over the standard ones any day. We just love the bantams cochins that we have now. They are so sweet and have wonderful personalities.

Bantam Cochins (Pekins) are not just a downsized version of the Large Fowl Cochin. It's very confusing. I'd like to just refer to mine as a Pekin, but no one else knows what I'm talking about.

*sigh*

In most of the world Pekins are recognised as a true bantam, having no large fowl counterpart. In the USA for some unknown reason they are called Cochin bantams. As has already been pointed out the two birds are of totally different types and when alongside each other can not be confused.

I think they call Cochins Pekins overseas. There was a member that said they were hatching some Pekins- and I thought they meant ducks- but they were in the UK. I think it was Jeanjeanie? (spelling?)They have David Bowie for an avatar. Maybe they'd know more.
