Is an electric fence dangerous to my flock?

I know one idiot that made his own electric fence that did not pulse. However he made it, it burned out in less than a day, and got hollered at by everyone he explained it to.
It has zapped my girls if they step on it, but their feathers must not conduct very well.
I LOVE mine, keeps deer out of my garden and preds out of my chickens space.

The old style chargers that don't pulse can kill animals that can't let go of it.

I used one once because it was all I could find locally while waiting for a good charger I had ordered.

A squirrel bit the wire and couldn't let go, and died.

My chickens routinely walk through another fence that has a 15 Joule charger, and about half the time it doesn't shock them at all​

I have kept my hens inside an electric mesh chicken fence for two years. It is an easy way to enclose a run and has kept out dogs, cats, mongoose, and rats, all of which live all around here. My hens have been fine, and no predator deaths since I got this in 2009. I do gather there is danger to chicks when they are little as they could get stuck and the repeated shocks could kill if they could not get away. 8 weeks was quoted to me as an average safe age, depending on size. my cattle strand does not hurt the turkeys in the neighborhood. there is a picture on my byc page.

yes, this one pulses and I have a solar charger.

i run 6000 volts on my fence for our goats.i think the pulse rate is 1 jouble . ours is the one you can hook up too a car battery. the chickens can stand on wire and they dont seem to botter them they go under or over.

No pulse systems still can be purchased and it is hard for smaller animals to pull away from these lines. If the package states "continuous" then it's a no pulse charger. No pulse system have a place but some smaller animals can get "stuck" to the fence by the charge.

I can't remember ever having heard of continuous chargers being illegal. Can you please provide your reference for this information?

Where are the no pulse outlawed?


Personally, I don't like the continuous charge around small animals, like cats and dogs.

TSC, LOWES and ACE still have them for sale.
