Is anyone else raising fall broilers? Our chicks came today: 8/18

What a neat update! I'm glad they're doing well and hanging out with the other birds. Yes, I'm curious if they lay.

I'm getting some broiler chickes end if September it's our 1st time with all of this so we shall see I'm getting wells slow whites less health problems but they take 2 weeks longer than the Cornish cross. I think the black take two weeks longer as well based on what I've been reading but I'm not an expert for sure. I'm excited. How old were the Roos you guys processed and what week did yours start crowing?

I still have Tank.. he is a Roo! and lilX. Tank started crowing at about 8 months. Lilx gives me a huge brown egg almost daily. free range and exercise. I feed my flock once a day
I processed all the birds at around 10 weeks. Fed FF and they got huge. largest bird was just under 7 pounds dressed. With hold feed 12 on 12 off and make them forage. Sure improved the end results when we processed, and no fat.

What a surprise to see this thread in the list!

We just got our 2013 fall batch of chicks about a week ago.

jchny2000 -- SERIOUSLY?? That is so neat that you still have them. Any pictures??

Oohh, ooh I Am! I just ordered 25, they are supposed to get here by the 21st! They are my first cornish x broilers, any advice? I ordered from Myer's. I am raising them in a 10x10x7 ft hoop house with an open top wire mesh run, the run is 70 ft in circumference. the wire mesh is 6 ft tall, made of heavy-medium gauge, and has 1in gaps. I am of course starting them in a brooder box, at least I have that much common sense :) I want to save a couple of hens to cross to my roos, you know, just for $h!+$ n giggles. That's right, the little serama roo on my shoulder is one of my breeders.......

If you choose to keep hens, free range and exercise will keep them going. I have a hen and roo from late july last year.
Roo crowed around 8 months, and the hens eggs are HUGE! They do hatch and both birds do breed. I have crossed them with GLW so far, trying BA next.
Chicks are big. Will try to post pics soon.

jchny2000 - I was thinking of the chickens that you kept today while I was watching my meaties. I have one little one that always escapes the fence and wanders far, far away from everyone else. Today I thought that one might be one to try to keep like you did! Do yours roost in the coop or stay on the floor?

Boichik86 -- I hope you enjoy raising them! It sounds like you have a great set-up ready! Your cross should be quite interesting. LOL I'm picturing a bulky, stocky little serama running around.

My fall batch is doing great! They're 3 & 4 weeks now (hatchery forgot some and had to send them a week later) and I'm starting to shut them out of the coop on nice days so they stay outside. These guys go after treats like none I've ever had! They actually run across their yard to get what I've thrown in. I really enjoy raising them....although, I'm always ready to be done when it's time.

I can't wait either, I also have a bantam indian game (cornish), a standard brahma pootra, and a salmon faverolle that i will be using as sires, so the mix will be interesting to say the least, I will be posting pictures.

Quote: SIMZ They do roost, tank seems to prefer the floor or lowest rung. LilX is ok with the higher roosts, but doesn't leave tank. Thats exactly the way those 2 acted! I had already decided to keep LilX, and Tank had the same wandering personality. I do plan to do another batch, but clearing out my extra roosters first.
I want to weigh tank, i can barely pick him up! When I do my turkeys later this month, and will have my scale out to check him. Fat little sumo wrestlers
