Is anyone here using thier wood stove yet?!

I am sure missing my wood burning stove this year....we got a new home with the intentions of putting the old stove in........well.......hubby is not what I would call handy around the house and with money being tight........could'nt hire it out.......so I miss it and long for another one some day ....

We've got a built in fire place, and we've been burning for a month or more already. We have propane back up, but we are trying to not use it. We haven't turned the furnace on yet. It heats up the living room, bed room, and kitchen no problem. We've already cut 3 loads if wood or more.
 
I have both fireplaces roaring right now. Supposed to drop to 31 tonite and tomorrow night. It is a good 80 degrees in my living room.

WE have a woodstock soapstone stove in the living room. Works so well it gets to over 80 degrees, but bedrooms are a comfy 75.(One story ranch, open floor plan). Also have insert in fireplace in basement, helps keep the upstairs floors warm. Love being toasty warm ! Both are very effecient with catalytic combusters to burn the smoke.
 
Mine is burning right beside me. It's a fireplace insert which is like a stove that fits in where the fireplace would be. It has a glass front so you kinda get the same effect. We usually get about 80-90% of our winter heat from it.

We look for was to save money, like heating with a renewable source of heat like wood.

We garden, and we are either very independent or are working towards the day we are independent.

I'm still reading the rest of the posts here, so I may be repeating...I had these very thoughts last night. I think that's why I brought up the stove topic! My good friend down the street who convinced me to just go and get my chickens also convinced me to get a Jotul stove. We're both gardeners, cooks, etc. You are absolutely right.

Although, I'm sure there are some very amusing differences between us all, as well.

Ozark Hen: I'll bet they would taste great with apples in a pie. To me they have sort of a liquer taste and I know I've seen apple pie recipes with brandy (I think) used either in the pie or to flavor whipped cream for topping.
 
Like a people we are different in our approach to becoming more independant.

My main wood source was my own land, but then a friend of mine told me of a county re-cycling program that was just getting started. The stated goal was to reduce landfill waste.

The outcome was that people take their trees that they have cut down to the re-cycling station and for a fee much less then the local landfill drop off the wood.

Then the people who need the wood (personal use only, rules clearly state no re-selling the wood) for home heating come there and haul it off for free.

The only wood I cut now off my ranch is to maintain fences and pature ground.
