Is anyone listening?

Oh, that's sad. My grandson at 5 was telling his friends at school about how he wanted to be a farmer like his Grampa. He said, "He has chickens and turkeys and sheeps and a llama. He feeds them so that they can feed us! Except the llama, he's just cute."

I don't think any of his friends understood, but he sure does!

Its not just the food that's becoming scary artificial - we're becoming a society that eats fake food while having fake relationships, patting ourselves on the back over fake accomplishments.

Couldn't have said it better myself. It's like they're living "virtual lives" in a "virtual world". I, however, prefer the real thing.

My young coworkers call me "old school" because I refuse to have an iPhone, and I don't carry my cell phone to work with me. I also don't engage in Face Book, Twitter, or any of that other nonsense out there, and actually cook ... from SCRATCH!, no less.

One of my best friends, in her early 50's and with teenaged boys, plays Farmville, whatever that is. She gets all excited about it, too. I got her a tomato plant to grow on her patio last year, and she enjoyed it. But, left to replant on her own this year, and she spent time in Farmville, instead.

I completely agree with all of you about fake lives, fake relationships, etc. I do facebook, because I have family all over the country and sometimes it's the easiest way to keep up - but I only include family and friends. I don't friend anyone I don't personally know well. I don't friend co-workers, employees, or random people, and if it hurts someone's feelings, oh well. I also text, but that is more a function of my job and my husband's job. We are in construction, and it is easier for someone to respond to a text than stop working every time the phone rings. I can ask a question to someone in the field, and they can answer me when they reach a good stopping point. I'm also on the phone a lot with vendors and customers, so my guys know it may be the best way they can reach me also.

I don't play any of those games that are 'virtual'. I have my own hobby farm, complete with garden and chickens (and hopefully soon a couple goats and a meat steer). I also find time also to cook from scratch, can and pickle produce, and help my DH with our never-ending list of projects around the homestead. By the time we got to this point, DH's kids were already out of the house, but we're hoping to teach our DGS about where food really comes from. He's only 1-1/2 years old now, but he LOVES going down and visiting the chickens.

I have to confess...I play Zoo World on facebook. It's not like it's my life though. I spend perhaps half an hour at it in the mornings. I also have a personal account on FB...and all my friends on it are actual, real life friends or relatives and I keep the two separate. The game is just for a bit of fun and the other is a quick way to keep up on happenings. But for real interaction it's the phone. On good technological thing is that long distance has improved so much and is actually affordable now. We use Vonage and are very pleased with it. The phone bill is less than $30 a month and includes unlimited long distance to both the US and Canada. It also includes several countries in Europe, but I don't know anyone to call over there, LOL. Nowadays though, I spend much, much more time online here at BYC and similar sites, and doing various research for homesteading, living greener and all that good stuff.

Well now I have to tell you. Some folks think a two hour drive to see friends is to far to go. Folks on here! I say it ain't that hard to put on a meal and some coffee.

One of the best times in my life was a visit to friends who at the time only had popcorn and Koolaid.

In my mind, the way to a friends house is never long.

That's why I hate facebook and all that. We just had a pic nic for the NYSers, on BYC. DW and I had a nice time. Everyone brought something and we talked chickens and kids and other things. Some folks had to drive a little farther but heck ain't it worth a night in a motel?
