is bread bad for chickens?

if my chickens are out in the yard and I want to put them in before dark - bread is the only enticement that I can offer that gets them running for the coop.

not bad.....as long as you keep it as a treat.

They'll be fine with some bread - everything in moderation. It wouldn't do as a full-time diet, it's not balanced - but it makes a good treat.

I can go out with a piece of bread or a hamburger bun and yell ""come on girls""" and they all come running, usually with the Roo in the lead. They will jump up in the air to take it out of my hand and I have one that if I sit will come get on my lap to get bread.
They love it!

I also give mine bread. If it's moldy it goes in the trash but mine love it. They always look to see if I'm carrying anything. If I am they are on my heals. I have 1 hen that will jump and take it out of my hand. I think there is Billy Goat in her bloodline somewhere. She will eat anything and everything she can before bedtime.

i have heard that white bread can clump in there crop and stay there because it is doughy
i am not sure if this is true, but i still feed them all bread

Bread is not bad for the chickens, in fact in the winter I will often add a couple of loaves of bread and corn for extra warmth to their feed. My grandmother used to do this and she always had heathy fat wonderfully laying hens. Oh how I miss her!!

I have access to free past its prime bread so my chickens eat it every day and plenty of it. I have glossy happy hens that lay lots of eggs!!

I would not feed much bread. It is very high in carbohydrates, and very low in protein. Not very good nutrition, in fact, it's really not good for us much either. It is vital that they get a high enough proportion of protein in their diet when they are putting out eggs day after day. So keep high carb treats such as bread and corn to a minimum, especially in summer when they aren't burning all the extra calories. There are tons of treats you can feed them, that they love AND are good for them.
