Is Brewer Yeast necessary? From grocery store? Yogurt?

smartie_pants....

I was on petducksrus.... I joined figuring it would be a good fit for someone like me who keeps their ducks in the house and i got harassed really bad! I actually got threatening emails from people which wwould say i'm torturing my ducks, i should go die, my duck is mentally retarded, you name it... i reported a bunch of people then i left... I hope they are much nicer to you!

sorry that happend to you!

The niacin tablet idea sounds like a wonderful solution, as I definitely have those. Smartie pants is so funny, the same thing happens to me when I go to other walmarts, nothing is where it's supposed to be! As for the petducksRus forum, when I applied for membership the moderator warned me that I wouldn't be able to talk about egg or meat eating. Even though I have no intentions of eating my ducks, I told her that it didn't seem like the place for me, since people do have to eat food, and I'm not going to pretend. But besides, why would I want to join a forum where I couldn't talk about eggs! Thats the reason I got into raising poultry in the first place! I wrote it as respectfully as possible, because I know some are sensitive on the subject. A couple days later I was sent a notice saying I had been denied entry into PetDucksRUs. Oh well! For whatever reason I thought I would run a question by the lovely people on BackYardChickens and, lo and behold, there is a whole department for waterfowl that I never noticed before. It's like going back to your old favorite Walmart and finding everything just where it's supposed to be....

I'm sorry you guys had a bad experience, but so did I. I would mention something about hatching eggs in a post and everyone would say that is dumb and that I should be adopting rescued ducks from the shelter instead of adding to the problem.

1. There are no ducks in the shelters here, they don't even take them I don't think.

2. I never dump my ducks or anything, so how am I contributing?

However when I really needed info, everyone was wonderful. Like the time I had a mama duck hatch out some babies and one almost died, then couldn't walk. they told me all about the yest and other things to do to help him.

I knew you couldn't talk about eating them because it IS a PET forum, but I didn't know you couldn't talk about eggs. That must be a new rule or something. I haven't had to ask them anything in a long time, so maybe things have changed over there. I would still join just in case you need some help on a serious issue, but its nothing like BYC over there. I went back and read some of the new posts and it seems way different! Maybe the older, knowlegable members stopped getting on?

Nettie, why did they attack you? What did you ask them?

Brewers yeast will give the ducklings additional niacin they need that isn't in most chick starters. I believe if you read the package for Purina Start and Grow it is recommended for ducklings up to 4 weeks old as well. Problem solved.

Aparently some people had a really big problem with me keeping indoor ducks. Even though i explained that they are treated wonderfully and they have everything they could ever want (and they DO go outside, they just don't stay outside) People attacked me and said i was torturing them. they said i should give them away to people who'd keep them on a farm. which was rather hypocritical since one of the founding members in a woman who pioneered keeping ducks inside... go figure... They also had problems with me diapering them, which i understand... It's not everyone's cup of tea, i just didn't appreciate the nastiness or the "you are stupid and you should die so your ducks can go live on a farm" emails... I ended up joining another group that was for people who were sick of the nastiness on that group, lol....

But not to hijack a thread..... on subject, lol.... Can ducklings have brewer's yeast after they are 3 weeks old? Is it good for adult ducks at all? I've never had a leg problem before, so i've never needed it. My ducks were on a chick starter (unmedicated) and they just switched to a game and show bird starter/grower today.

Can i still give them yeast? or is it too late and not effective?

People attacked me and said i was torturing them

My ducks want to know how they can sign up for some of that torture

(It's cold today and their little feets are cold!)

WOW! Last time I was there about 80% of the members diapered their ducks and kept them inside. Something big must have happened to change it up like that. I take back what I said, don't join!

I'm pretty sure you can give it to ducks of any age, but if your ducks show no signs of weak legs or leg injuries it really won't be of much help at that age.

I've got a question...I'm planning to brood my chicks and ducklings together (7 day-old chicks, due to arrive the 16th and 6 duck eggs in the 'bator due to hatch on the 20th)...can I put the brewer's yeast in the feed for the ducklings and let the chicks eat it too?

What about adding a 5hr to their water.... lol... i mean one little bottle has 30mg of niacin 40mg of B6 500mcg of B12 ..... its mostly good for you until you get to the 1870mg of energy blend....lol
