Is BYC Experiencing Cabin Fever?

Well I never learned to drive, could not afford even a jalopy and it's gas & upkeep. I walked everywhere and I mean walked. Mostly on the shoulders, not many sidewalks.Had my backpack and sometimes had 9 lbs. of groceries inside, plus carried two canvas tote bags with about 5 lbs. each.

In summer had to go out very early am to nearby ( 7-10 mile round trips) grocery stores also carrying the blue ice in the backpack for perishables.

In winter I used to carry bananas inside gloves, inside the coat pockets hoping they wouldn't freeze.

When I got to the proper age I could ride the free senior bus and all was good for awhile.
Even got rides to doctor apts. within a certain distance. New administration and firings ,
brought about only one full time driver and one part timer. Sometimes don't get to a grocery store for three weeks. Admin. claims they serve 1700 a month :gig. Bus runs only 8-3, weekdays only, No bus on any type of calendar holiday. Used to have all the school holidays off as well because basically women drove the buses.

Still it is lots better than nothing and it's nice to see other passengers and friends. The basic idea was to let seniors get out for social events, companionship, shopping, etc.

Not learning to drive is popular here too. And no learning to read and write in cursive.

When I lived in north FL a friend told me the kids aren't taught reading/writing cursive. Or how to tell time on an analog. She was taking the time to teach her grandkids that sort of thing.

... not learning to think seems popular with the kids these days too!

( bet our parents and grandparents said the same thing ;) )

True! On both statements :lau

Which makes me remember another story about a school kid here in WY. His dad worked for us at the golf course and was so mad one day. He said his grade school son came home from school the day before and told him the teacher taught him the penny coin was made of copper and had Lincoln on it because Lincoln freed slaves. So he got his image on a brown coin.

I am at a loss of words for the amount of dumb that teacher attempted to instill.

I don't teach my kids all that useless info about European kings from hundreds of years ago, but they did learn how to tell time from an early age. They also know how to use cash, address an envelope, hopscotch, jump rope & write cursive. Reading cursive is harder than writing it for some reason, but we're working on it. Think about how few people will be able to read the original constitution if/when the power grids go down.

A lot unfortunately.:hmm

Seriously, my first generation of nieces & nephews left home not knowing how to cook, do laundry, clean, send a parcel, get on a plane.... Some don't know how to drive & a dew are in their mid/late twenties & still live at home with their parents still cooking & cleaning for them. That's just freaking crazy!

Reading and writing are becoming optional with all the talk to text and listen to your text things. :(

I spent some long years without a vehicle. The kids and I rode our bikes everywhere and my husband was rarely at home. If it was raining I'd plan for a taxi to take us home after grocery shopping. The kids loved that, going in a taxi.
