Well I never learned to drive, could not afford even a jalopy and it's gas & upkeep. I walked everywhere and I mean walked. Mostly on the shoulders, not many sidewalks.Had my backpack and sometimes had 9 lbs. of groceries inside, plus carried two canvas tote bags with about 5 lbs. each.
In summer had to go out very early am to nearby ( 7-10 mile round trips) grocery stores also carrying the blue ice in the backpack for perishables.
In winter I used to carry bananas inside gloves, inside the coat pockets hoping they wouldn't freeze.
When I got to the proper age I could ride the free senior bus and all was good for awhile.
Even got rides to doctor apts. within a certain distance. New administration and firings ,
brought about only one full time driver and one part timer. Sometimes don't get to a grocery store for three weeks. Admin. claims they serve 1700 a month
. Bus runs only 8-3, weekdays only, No bus on any type of calendar holiday. Used to have all the school holidays off as well because basically women drove the buses.
Still it is lots better than nothing and it's nice to see other passengers and friends. The basic idea was to let seniors get out for social events, companionship, shopping, etc.
