Is BYC Experiencing Cabin Fever?

Honestly all the things that kids aren't getting to learn these days frightens me. Basic life skills are being completely ignored. What happened to all the cooking classes? Home Ec? Basic Ag? Why is it that the 400 year history of another country is now more important than learning to feed yourself, sew your clothing, grow a garden, learning to drive or prepare your taxes? All of these were on the outs when I was still in school. Some I learned myself, most my mother taught me. Nowadays though it seems schools and most parents don't care to pass on any such skills and it boggles my mind. It's just...sad.

My son is going to be thirty this coming October.

I am a single parent. I would have loved to home school but couldn't... for two reasons I had to work, And I am not patient enough.... at least I thought so.

When he started Grade school He was almost a year younger than the rest of the kids. I didn't know I could have waited till the next year. But he was a full head taller than rest already.

I was appalled at what the home work was. A few xeroxed pages places to put an x mark for answers. Oh my gawd what they didn't cover for science math and reading.
He could have taught some of the classes. He did teach the teacher in science. She got the planets in the wrong order. My son was already reading at college level by the time he hit fifth grade.

In kindergarten he was sent to the principals office at least once a week. He loved it because the principal would sit and talk to him. Funny thing was Mr Dorsey was a teacher when I went to grade school there. He was an entertaining teacher and was very good at his job. Any teacher that sends a kindergartner to the principal shouldn't be teaching IMHO. It was her first year.

By seventh an eighth grades I didn't know this but the kids started bullying him. the teacher spent most of his time lecturing on behavior. It made DS mad because he Badly wanted to learn stuff.

By the time high-school came around he had social anxiety so bad we had to pull him from high-school. I enrolled him in Phoenix High. Right there on the same campus. The way it works is they take one subject at a time. Once a week they would turn in their homework, Receive a bit of class time and the next weeks homework. It Takes forty hours of study to go through a semester of a single subject.

HE LOVED it. but by then his self esteem was gone. He thought he wasnt very good in school. Though he was making Bs and Cs.. Still couldnt write cursive I figured it wouldnt matter because of computers. He can read it though.

HE was very worried that because he couldnt do higher math that he wouldnt be able to become a marine biologist. I told him he had it in him to do it, and that there are hundreds of different ways to do math. ONe day he would find a teacher that would inspire him and he would have an aha moment.

Happened after he got his Associates of science.. He decided he wanted to Be an Astronomy Major at San Diego State. He made it and college completely on grant money. Till he failed the Quantum Physics and Astrophisics course (same class). Oh he understood the course and the math but he wasnt fast enough. There were sxity students in the class a major portion of them were Graduate students that were taking it over. He had a major melt down.

Through encouragement from me he took some time off and took a couple of classes he enjoyed, Creative writing. Half way through the class the Professor called him after class. She then offered to write him a letter of recommendation to go for a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative writing, once he got his Bachelors degree.

That was when he switched majors to Geology. He had filled in 90 percent of the requirements already all he had to do was take a couple of specific classes and some labs. He got a Bachelors of Arts in Geology. First one in quite some time they dont even list it in the Books.

Sorry I wrote a book. But its a subject near and dear to my heart. We always dug and found out the real history not the revision history. I helped him unwind math. I always told him when I mad a Mistake, he corrected my grammar. And I always told him when I didn't know something. His thirst for education is never ending, as is mine.

We are both Science fiction Writers. Me I write Adventure that could be a graphic novel. He writes Cosmic Horror on the order of Lovecraft. His writing Is far better than mine. His command of the English language is far better than mine as well

You're a good mom. :love

So I just finished reading To Kill a Mockingbird for the umpteenth time and I was wondering what everyone’s favorite book was? To me, your favorite book is one of the most intimate things you can tell someone.
I posted on another thread how I've never read To Kill a Mockingbird., even though I now live in the part of Alabama where it was based and the author lived. Gotta get to the library, I know..
But one of my favorite books is 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Also really liked All That Rises must Converge by Flannery O'Connor.

This is the worst winter in Kansas City in a decade. Pray for me, I work in customer service!
