Is BYC going to upgrade?

Do you expect BYC to be down for a while? As in days?

Just wondering so we can prepare ourselves and head over to BYH again.
I really doubt it'll be down for that long, but it might be down for several hours longer than what the other sites were. TEG was down for less than an hour. BYC has a LOT more add-ons then the other sites, along with being much larger.

When we're ready to upgrade BYC, we'll put the site into maintenance mode, uninstall all the add-ons that we won't be using on XF2, uninstall the custom style, and then overwrite the files with XF2 files. Then we will use the web interface to migrate the configuration file, as it's in a different place on XF2. After that, the real fun can begin. We'll run the upgrade command over the command line, and then the upgrade will begin. The upgrade script will probably take a while to run. After it completes, BYC will be running on XF2. After than, we will run the command to convert the database to utf8mb4, to add unicode character support. That will also take a while to run. Once that has completed, we will add a few lines to the new config file to enable features such as emojis, delete the old XF1 config file, and we'll also install the custom style for XF2. Then all the add-ons that we're keeping will be uploaded and upgraded. Once the critical ones are updated and have the permissions set, we'll probably be able to open the site.

While I anticipate that this process will take significantly longer than it did for the smaller sites, I still doubt it'll take more than several hours. Of course there is the possibility that things could go wrong, and that would delay things, the upgrades of the smaller sites went pretty smoothly.

Oh great...this doesn't sound anything like a few years ago.

I don't remember how long we were down with the last 'big change' but it seemed like days.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not

I think BYC was down for days. I remember the day when we re-opened BYC in 2017, I think I had been up all night because of my sleep problem, it was raining here in Salt Lake, and I configured the permission settings for BYC.

The data doesn't have to be imported for the upgrade from XF1 to XF2, unlike the switch from Huddler to XF. It's already here, so the upgrade script will take significantly less time to complete than the import did.

I wasn't being sarcastic.

I'm glad it won't take days.
This is great news.

I'm not sure if that bbcode was ever on TEG. It isn't one that comes standard with XF.
It's not on BYH, so probably wasn't at TEG either.
In order for BYC to stay online, we had to switch, as Huddler hosted the site previously, and they were shutting down.
Ah, okay, I didn't realize they hosted it too. Thanks for explaining it.
Now XF 1.5 is no longer supported. It'll no longer get feature updates, so it'll no longer get updates to support newer server requirements, so we're planning on upgrading BYC to the newest version of XF.
That part I understand. :D Thanks again for explaining it. :bow

Do you have a good book recommendation?

:lau
Just started it last night.
