Is Clutter in the Brooder Good Too? (And Other Questions)

As far as clutter, some stuff to interact with is good, just don't add so much that the chicks have no floor space - a practice roost, things to hop up on and jump off of, a shallow pan of dirt to roll around in, a clump of weeds to pick at. How many chicks are you picking up? 4x4' is a pretty generous space to work with as long as you don't overload it with babies.

I was accused of being overly indulgent when I made a perch, a swing, and a dust bath for our little flock, but by the time they moved out to the coop they knew all the ropes. I was amazed at how the chicks would work out on these “enrichments”.

The more I watched them the clearer it became these are bright, inquisitive, energetic little creatures and it’s no wonder they can get into trouble if there’s nothing to do all day except eat, sleep, and peck on your neighbor.

I'm getting 8 -- 4 for me, 2 for the person loaning me the equipment, and two spares in case of trouble that I could either keep or sell if all make it and are actually pullets.

I only have 4 feet of height to work with.

Go horizontal and vertical. Make it the highest you can and place it near a corner so the chicks can regulate where they want to be if you have some length. Seems like common sense but I mention it only because it's all so overwhelming in the beginning.

Hi! I think just an old-fashioned 100 watt light bulb might work for your small space and heat. It is good to set everything up and see how it works before you bring them home. The first couple of days especially after they have been shipped. If you set it all up early you can learn how warm it gets and maybe change light bulbs. It is best to have everything all warm and ready before they come home.

Yes, that's the plan. We're getting the rest of the supplies tomorrow evening and it should be all set up no later than Thursday morning.
