Is Egg Production Consistent from the Start?

our first egg came today (HOORAY!) and i expect at least another to lay her first in the next day or two. once they lay one, should we be expecting consistent, 4-6 day a week laying right from the start, or will they take a few days off between as their little bodies adjust to what's happening?

Mine were pretty consistent in production from the start, but I did have a couple of very anxious weeks as they figured out where to lay, pecked some eggs, ate some eggs, and laid a couple of rubber eggs.

Can take up to a month or so for things to smooth out to their 'normal'.
Meanwhile, eggs everywhere, some of them can be rather funky looking, soft or thin shelled, huge double yolked eggs.

Depending on breed of bird, you may not get that 4-6 a week.

She's a little champion- we are on 9 straight days of an egg from her! She laid 3 out in the run, but the last few have all been in the box and thankfully she seems to have clued in the other chicken who just started laying. All the eggs have been perfect! I'm so amazed by this! And I can tell the difference now between the "I need to lay!" And "I laid!" Noises! I'm in love haha

Congrats to you (and your girl) on that 1st egg!

The shorter hours of daylight in the winter can slow them down. So can molting, sickness, stress, broodiness, age, poor nutrition.

Sometimes I think mine go on strike just because they want a day off (just kidding).

I really expected her to stop around day 4 or 5, just to regroup. I'm really surprised!
