Is Egg Theft Common?

I think it all depends on where you live and whether or not you can trust your neighbors. If you live in a high crime area, you should be more concerned than someone who has no close neighbors. Only you can determine that. If you are worried, a camera can definitely come in handy. Good luck!

I suppose where I am at I don't worry too much. We have a fenced yard and the eggs are laid in the coop and it seems like someone would have to fiddle with the clasps to get in. Although, we do get quite a few homeless coming through the area.

The people we know live in a different area, and their neighbors aren't that close to them. I hope they figure out who it is.

At least they're only stealing the eggs. I had cockerels come up missing from a latched coop, two per night for the better part of a week, with the coop still latched up in the mornings a few Christmas-seasons past. Two-legged predators are the worst sort!

Say what?! How awful!

Funny you say two-legged predators. I was thinking of posting this thread in the predator forum since this is a predatory type of behavior. I agree, people can be too clever and sneaky for their own good.

There are so many good wireless camera systems now- or your friend could use trail cams- which make no noise when they record. At night the IR light will come on, but sounds like the thieves come during the day, so unless they were really looking, they probably wouldn't even notice. One where the egg access is- whether it's a small door into the nest boxes or the "people" door - and one camera wherever a vehicle is most likely to pull up. Then you have the license plate for police-- and pictures of the person. Even just a couple of trail cams with video capability would do it.
