Is Egg Theft Common?

I live on 15 acres fenced but backs to the woods,4 months ago two legged predators stole 12 8wk old chicks and we had never had anyone both anything before that. Pens, run and coop is padlocked when no one is home or at night now. Good luck hope a camera catches the one doing it.

What is up with chicken thieves? It doesn't make sense to me. Sorry to hear that happened to you.

Cameras are pretty inexpensive these days, but many moons ago my business did an analysis os the impact of cameras, vs having a sign that says “video security cameras in use” with no discernible difference in the deterrence of theft. There are signs like that on amazon.
We live rurally with no neighbors. We chose to use camera as we’ve had trash dumped and poaching on our land. We’ve caught one poacher shooting deer out of season. Since his arrest and fine- no more problems!

Glad the camera helped catch that guy. Sounds useful!

i imagine if your friend really wants to keep trespassers out of his chicken coop, it would be easy enough to do. padlocks on the door and the trail camera would be my first purchase.
i wonder tho about these neighbors or trespassers who are that hungry. maybe homeless folk.
if your friend installs the locks and still no eggs it means he has one or more egg eating hens, or he has rats, possums, skunks or something getting in and eating eggs.

I will definitely suggest these ideas to them. They put their guard dog where someone shouldn't be able to get in without crossing the dog, but I think they need a cam, too.

They figure it is someone they know because the eggs go missing only when everyone is at work/school and no issues on their days off.

Was it a one time thing or over the course of days/weeks?
Did they find out who did it?

They had chicken feed stolen before this and they have been losing nearly all eggs each day while at work. No word on if they have figured out who did it, but they have no issues on weekends.

Cameras make for better evidence than dog testimony, even if it is a very, very smart dog. :old

I have had people steal eggs from my cooler. I sell my eggs. I did have a thief stealing my egg money I leave in a cookie jar. I do have several cameras and caught the thief taking the money and putting it in their pocket. They did go to jail. I live rural on a dead end road. I have several game cameras up on my property. I see mostly 4 legged predators. Most nights I see a predator on at least one of the cameras. The only drawback to this camera is that it takes the tiny micro SD card but otherwise it takes great pictures.

The pics are definitely good quality. Cameras seem like a great investment when you have a lot of land or animals to protect.

Thank you, I almost gave up until family and friends started bringing me chicks then the chicken math got me. I diffintly learned the hard way how to protect my girls.
I also have trail cams up now as well, they work great and the quality is good.

My egg money was missing so I started taking the money out of the cookie jar that I kept it in. I only keep around $20. in it for change. One evening I forgot to take the money out and the next morning the it was gone. The first time the money came up missing and also a very expensive Stihl trimmer came up missing with it's charger. We figured it had to be someone we knew because the battery charger was in the garage on a work bench that we keep the chargers on so it had to be someone who knew us and where we kept the chargers. The first theft the HD on our DVR had just died so I didn't get any pictures. I immediately replaced it and left some money in the cookie jar and it came up missing so I looked at the pictures and their was the thief and it was someone we knew. Hubby wouldn't let me file charges until we got more video and the thief made more visits. Once I only left coins in the cookie jar and low and behold the thief came and took the coins. The person was an addict. They had also been stealing from other people we knew. I'm glad we have the cameras. The thief had been over visiting and when told about the theft suggested it was another person we knew. Of course they weren't going to own up to it but we have them on video several times. I did turn over the pictures to the police when another person filed charges against them for stealing with an actual eye witness who had confronted the thief in the act.
