Is feeding hamburger OK?

Nope, Santa has the gym membership in the family (for raquetball). I have the home weights and DVD's. But maybe time to change that.

and why aren't you working out yet? Get off the computer and start working!

Actually in the cold carbs are better...protein is harder to metabolize into energy. I used to run a feed mill on a cattle feedlot and in bad weather would drop most of the protein and jack-up the carbs (corn) because of this. Animals will use the protein for energy (heat) but not as quickly and plus it is lots more expensive. Having said that...mine get the kid's left over burgers as well...unless the dogs look at me like I should love them more!

I lost my dog a couple years ago. We're planning to get another this spring. Until we got chickens this past spring, we'd look at table scraps we were throwing away, and think "What a waste".

Now we'll probably have to flip a coin to see which scraps the dogs gets, and which the chickens get.

Think beef fat . . .

No, actually Teach's point is a very, very good one! Probably the usual BYC'er is one who will feed too many high carb treats, tho'. (Or give them a ton of salad greens because they can't get out on the lawn with all the cold & snow. That should almost be a no-no, certainly if it's all the little snow-bound critters can eat.)

Moderation in all things - exercise, too

WHAT?

Is that a typo? YOu have a 17 year old hen??? Holly Molly! I would like to see a pic of her if you have one. That's crazy!

I feed mine kitchen scraps too. I dont' have any as old as Bantymums, but none have had issues.

I will take the fat comment. That is the real power house in the nutrition world. That is why they turned whale blubber into candles and put it in lamps. I have seen the error im my comment!!

But really...when we talk about cooked meats most of that grease is removed and poured off...want some really great feathers and such...pour some of that fat onto their feed...not alot can do bad things to palatability but that is pure energy!
