Is fluctuating bad or not?

i have about 17 eggs right now. And the temp. is actually only fluctuating between about 96 and 100. Where should I put the jar of water though?

my temp spiked to 106 four times and bottomed out at 91 and 93 while i was getting it regulated so far i have a 20% hatch rate they hatched early though

Is this a homemade one?

A smaller wattage bulb would give you less fluctuation, IF it is still enough to give you the temperature you need. Actually I ended up having to have one bulb on full-time in my homemade 'bator, and a second smaller one on the thermostat (and it is now stable to less than 1 F, woo hoo).

Of course, you probably don't wanna be swapping around bulbs with eggs in there. But, something to consider for next time.
