Ordering 15 chicks from Murray McMurray hatchery and its offered to get quick chick and gro gel for $4 each. Are they necessary? Is it something the chicks have access to eat/drink during shipping or would I give it to them when they arrive?

It has been my experience that chicks do quite fine if delivery happens within about 2 days. If that starts getting delayed mortality starts to increase.

This is the case because for those first couple days the chicks are still feeding off of the absorbed yolk.

Hope that helps.

I used sav a chick electrolytes for first 5 days then weekly it’s cheaper. It perks them up on arrival and helps because they may not be great eaters right away. :)

I've used grow gel once and the chicks LOVED it! They were meat chickens, but gobbled it up - all were in great condition. Usually I use electrolytes for first several days and for any lethargic ones, I give them a drop of Nutri-Drench 2x/day till they are better. Not sure what quick-chick is, but maybe just another name for an electrolyte powder?
