Looks like a cockerel. I see pointy saddle and hackle feathers. Expect in the next few days or weeks to hear the first crow. If you are able to handle him at this age, there's a good chance that he will grow up to be a friendly roo. Or at least not people aggressive.

Roosters make great pets and are more often easily handled than not. It sounds like you thought it was a pullet only because he's so sweet

Lots of roosters are sweet.
