I have several light Brahma hens and a roo from TSC. I am wondering if it is possible to breed these birds and get quality chicks? I would probably only show them at our local fair. Or will these bird's descendants always be hatchery quality? I am interested in getting into breeding a specific breed, and I was thinking of starting with these since I already have them. Or would I be better off buying chicks from a breeder with this purpose in mind?

That was kind of what I was thinking. I guess that means I can pick what ever breed I want then if I need to start with better stock :D

Start by purchasing hatching eggs from different reputable breeders of show quality birds.
Perhaps go to different poultry show events to get an idea, join a breeder's association for help and guidance.

It is theoretically possible to breed up hatchery stock, but only if you have quality stock to breed it to. For example, if you can get an show-quality Brahma rooster, the offspring of the show-quality Brahma rooster over hatchery hens should be better than the hatchery hens. But, you would have to hatch a lot of chicks, cull heavily, and spend years breeding up to truly get quality birds.

It is much quicker and easier to start with quality from the beginning, and it will be cheaper in the long run. Hatchery birds eat just like show-quality birds.

Hatchery stock can be bred up; I have seen this done with Campines. However, with breeds like the Brahmas, it would be better to get quality stock since it is available. The Campines took many years and many birds.
