So, I think I understand more about the leakage and where it would show up on the cockerels and pullets...on the darker birds. But for a bird with these colorings, is the leakage considered the darker colors on the wings…making this a male? Or is the coloring that is all over this white base colored 11ish week old bird considered leakage…and if so, how do you determine the sex? Thanks.

That's a cockerel.

Leakage is color that bleeds through, like on his breasts. Leakage happens when a chicken isn't pure for a color, like 1 copy of black X Red, can result in black chickens with red leakage, which can be in the hackles, saddles, face, breast, or wings. Or a combination. But that's if the black is gold based though.

Ok…I get it. But, I thought that only the females would have leakage on their breast and neck area…not the males. And do you find him to be ‘him’ because of just the color on the wings, or the comb or ??? Thanks!

No, not all red feathers on breasts mean female. Males can have red on breasts, it all depends on the genetics. Your boy appears Dominant White X Red, which explains the red leakage.

Features that scream cockerel is the shoulder patches, comb size, & color, & he's getting in saddle feathers.

Thank you. Big help…appreciate it.

So this is a boy? (The bird in front). I see that it has the light patches on the wing, but also on the neck area.. I don’t see the saddle feathers (although they may be present and I am just not good enough to recognize it). Not a very red comb…no waddle present. Gets a bit confusing. I just really want to get good at this. Boy, right?

Both pictured are cockerels.
