Hi, I'm Pattii from Napa. 4 months ago I got 8 two day old chicks, we lost two to the sky falling and a hawk calling. The remaining 6 are a really fun addition to our family. 3 are Cochins, 2 are Plymouth rocks and 1 buff Orpington. We thought everyone was a hen until this morning when somebody did what sounded like a cross between a crow and a croak. How old are they when you can really tell the gender?

Around that age would be old enough to tell the gender. If you post pictures I would be happy to ID them for you. :welcome glad you joined.

! Great to have you with us. Age of positive ID also kind of varies with breed - some show rooster characteristics early, others late. I think after you have a certain number of posts under your belt (10, I think) you can post pics. For more responses I suggest you post here https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

Best of luck and happy holidays, Patti!

Wow , thanks for the welcome its pouring here but I will try to get a picture of fluffy to post. The tail is also different from the other 5 looks more like plumes growing than the squared off ones of the rest of the gang. He or she is a buff Cochin with the most beautiful golden iridescent feathers from her head to her shoulders.

Our Cochin hen who's egg laying has recently dropped to a couple a week, has started trying to crow in the mornings! What's up with that? A gender confused hen? We know its her, I snuck out when the crowing started and she was the only one awake. Our other four chickens are all babies.
