Is it a trait of Black Australorps to not roost?

Could she have broody hens & not realize it? I have 1 sleeping in the nest box right now, but that's because she's doing her very best to hatch out some babies... in 10 degree weather

During the summer, I had 3 of 4 in the nest boxes, and of course they are my main egg layers

Otherwise, they roost just like everybody else.

Our purebred BA's dont roost, they just love and prefer the nest box......
It gets annoying to clean

But yes its just somethinbg they doo.

The one I had roosted, but the one down the street really prefers her nest box. It never occurred to me it could be a breed thing. I just thought it was a lazy chicken. Interesting.

I know this is an old thread, but, my 8 ten week old sexlinks are roosting (in their tractor), and my 6 twelve week old black australorps are not roosting (in a tractor next to them). Instead they lay on the ground. I have seen one or two of the BAs on the roost bar, so, I know they can get up there. And there is easy access to the next boxes, which are not on the ground, but lower than the roost bar. I don't know why they sleep on the ground.

I have Australorps for the first time and they will not use their roost. They are two-month old pullets and insist on sleeping on the ground in the coop. I have had many other breeds, and after a couple of nights placing them on the roost, they always used the roost. I repeatedly place the Australorps on the roost, yet they still return to the ground to roost.

I am having trouble getting my Australorps to roost. They keep wanting to sleep on ledge outside nesting boxes and make a mess. Each night I go down and move them onto the roost but they seem so unsteady on their legs and have trouble gripping. I am a bit concerned as they are about 4 months old and I felt should be roosting.
