Is it at all possible for production red to go broody?

So do you mean that whoever incubated/hatched the little chicks cross-breed them predominantly for this "original domain trait" (eg. egg-laying), and then this trait is lost when they reproduce (or not as "good" anyway?) I think I understand if that's what you mean. So that means they won't lay eggs as much as their parents? Will they have a higher chance of turning broody than their parents? Thanks :)
Yes...the egg laying is likely to not be as high

Maybe...typically they use non-broody breeds originally to get the very non-broody production layers, so this is likely to continue. My suggestion if you want broody hens, get a couple Silkies & let them sit your eggs, or use an incubator.

Silkies would be ideal for broody hens or orpingtons! I just love my orpingtons!

Ahhh ok, yeah I heard silkies are good like that. Luckily, after we had 4 chooks randomly die, my mum's friend gave us three little chicks she had incubated and hatched and taken care of herself... one of them is a silkie. We got it around 3-4 weeks ago, and it was 3 weeks old when we got it so it's probly about 7 weeks old.

When it grows up, I might just let her do it. I reckon they kinda look ugly though... compared to the feathered ones... my brutally honest opinion. Sorry :(

LOL...everyone has their favorites. I think the Naked Necks & Show Girls are hideous (I have 1 bow-tie project bird from someone's project birds) I love the little fluffy Silkies tho. Have 1 white lookin a bit rooish at about 13-14 weeks, 8 eggs in the bator & 24+ more due the middle of June to go in the next hatch. I also have a ton of the standard breeds & some hybrid layers too...so my flock is extremely mixed & colorful...LOL

Haha yeah they do sort of look nice, but I dunno just a bit ugly :p the chick we have looks just like the other non-silkies though. I dunno maybe they're just a bit small. That'd be nice, a bit of multi-culturalism... in a sense :p another chook I hate the look of is the Japanese Bantam... urgh, just looks so posh and arrogant from the pictures! My mum wanted to get them because apparently they warn of snakes or something? I dunno... can't quite remember what they do lol :p

LOL...the Jap Banties do look a bit snobish don't they? My Silkie looks over twice as big as my banties of the same age, but not quite as big as the LF of the same age. The feathers are the key here!!! If you have a well feathered Silkie it could look almost twice as big as it really is!!! They are all "fluff" & very little bird...LOL
