I sometimes do pick up poo with my bear hands, and now with 37 new peeps*(9 week olds)
I'm going to have poop everywhere.
Are there risks to picking it up with my bear hands?

yes, there are risks, but mainly if you pick up poo and then stick your fingers in yer mouth, on food, in yer eye, etc. without washing with soap first. it probably won't kill you to handle it and then wash soon after. but. maybe a little cat-litter scoop or something would help

There is bacteria in feces, so it's always a risk.

THAT BEING SAID. I've been totally covered in poop before... cow, chicken, rabbit, human (I'm a mom and an RN...it happens). If you wash carefully, and make sure not to touch food, your face, etc...you can minimize that risk.

Or...wear some gloves.

I'll admit

I do pick up poo with my bare hands - IF, and that is, if it looks solid enough to do so. I'm certainly not going to pick up random chick poo or something. But if it were, say, in the nesting box and from an adult bird, sure. I always wash my hands, and unknown to most people - There are far worse things we touch, and more often too, than chicken poo.

sometimes if it is covered in shavings I will grab around it and get the shavings then chuck the whole piece out of the coop...

I think you are alright, a couple of days ago I was outside doing chores with DD, she was in the run and I come over to see what she is doing because she is really quiet (she's almost 2)...
Well she was standing there pleased as punch rolling some chicken poop between her fingers!

So if my daughter is still alive after that episode I can imagine you'll be alright because who knows if she was sucking on her fingers in between rolling her little poop sticks.

I wish I could train my bear to pick up the poo...

just kidding, like the others said, wash wash wash...use a fingernail brush too!

Just don't pick it up with your beer hand and you'll be ok! If you do pick it up with your beer hand you might spill some and then that's just plain ole alcohol abuse!
