Is it cruel to separate a pair of chickens raised together? I'm sad.

I think that you have done the right thing!

We have two EE's that could not be separated.

Cannot imaging breaking them apart. They eat together, roost together, forage together (no more than 6 feet apart)
and stand by each other when one is laying. Very very sweet.
