Is It Healthy To Only Have One Chicken?

I am so blessed to not have neighbors.

Thank you for reminding me!

Just tell her all the time that she will have lots of sisters soon. Hang in there - a year goes fast!

Maybe you should get a parrot. A large cockatoo or Eclectus. They have no idea what loud is!!!!!!!!!!

I am teaching my cockatoos to crow like a rooster. If I ever get busted, I'm going to show them the Cockatoo that crows.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it !

It would actually make less noise if you had two. They are flock animals and a singleton will often call constantly looking for the rest of the flock--even if there is no flock. Best of luck, so glad we live out in the sticks!

I grew up in San Jose California and most of my neighbors had chickens. We didn't. We lived on the corner with one annoying neighbor "Judy" who had this dog who constantly barked in a very annoying high pitch bark.....Anyway - she could see into our back yard so we could not have chickens but like I said everyone else did. My neighbor across the street had the sweetest little coop for her two girls and she would let them out in the evenings when she got home from work and they were very happy. Glenda masked the sounds of her chickens by playing the radio for her girls all day long - not too loudly but loud enough to mask the sounds. She also had a little pond with a little waterfall like thingy with made the running water sound. The funny thing was that Judy never knew anyone had chickens because she would have called the HOA and complained. People used lattice and star jasmine to make screens. If you work at it a little then you would be amazed what you can do.

Other than when a few of mine lay eggs (2 announce it and 2 lay eggs silently) they never ever make a sound. My Rooster on the other hand is VERY LOUD but lucky for me all my neighbors have Roosters so there is no one to complain.

It just strikes me as odd that your neighbors can "Hear" the chicken peeping and that soft peep is so loud that it bothers them. I say out of sight out of mind. Put a log slice outside with an axe in it and let them know the chicken isn't going to be a problem anymore.....and I betcha they will never "hear" your chicken if you keep it stealthy in the back.
