Since we got our chickens about two years ago, my family has acted like I was COMPLETELY nuts. Like who in the heck has chickens running around their backyard????

Well just last week, my dad was over and of course the girls greeted him at his car. When he came in he said, "well, your grandfather would have been proud."

I said, "of what?"

And then he proceeded to tell me that his dad raised chickens and ducks in their backyard in the city the whole time he was growing up.

It was kind of a bittersweet revelation though. His dad wasn't always the nicest guy, and he and my aunt said they were always little embarrassed about the condition of their home compared to those of their neighbors. But it's also interesting to think that poultry-love might be hereditary. Who knew?

Could be... My dad raised gamefowl (fighting roosters) back in the day. My maternal grandmother said her family kept chickens, and I know my paternal grandfather kept chickens as well at one time.

This is a subject close to my heart.
My best friend from years ago did a PHD in geneology, she said that we get most of our genes from our grandparents!!!
That explains why I have the same traits as my Dear departed granmothers!!
If you delve into your lives, I bet you will see some amazing similarities between you and your grandparents too!

It's said that I look exactly like my paternal grandfather at my age.

He's in his 80's in this pic and still kickin'

His Grandmother kept a small flock of chickens, I'm the 1st since her to do the same.

I guess technically speaking, all of our genes came through our grandparents.

I'm ALOT like my maternal grandmother (except she hated animals, and I sure don't.) It's funny how we're so much like our ancestors, but we're also such individuals too.

Boy, do I wish I had some pictures of my grandfather with his chickens. Unfortunately there are practically no photos of my dad's family whatsoever.

My grandpa had pet chickens, we have lots of pictures of him with them on his lap. And this is a man who was raised when everyone had chickens for eggs and meat. Yet as an olde man, he sat on his patio with his chicks.

My Dad's maternal grandmother-my great-grandmother-raised chickens and loved them. I have a couple of pictures of her and her chickens. Several years after she died, her husband ( my great grandfather) raised turkeys. Now I'm raising both chickens and turkeys..and love them to pieces! It MUST be the genes!!
