Is it Maran or Marans??????

All right, which is it? I've seen it both ways, and even with breeders. The Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities has it listed as MARAN.

The town in France that they are named for is Marans, so they are called Marans.

I am glad to see this question asked. While it is perfectly understandable for beginners or those unfamiliar with the breed to spell the name wrong I feel that anyone calling themselves a breeder, and especially selling eggs, should know the correct name. I would be wary of anyone selling eggs or birds and calling them a maran. I think it is no different than someone selling coocoo (yes, I've seen it) marans, or bard rocks.

Sorry to go on but can you tell this is a pet peeve of mine?

Well, when I first got on the board.... I saw that everyone said it was Marans... but when I saw it spelt Maran on the website for critical breeds, I was stumped. I would have thought that they would at least have gotten it right. And looking around, even some other big chicken sites had it as maran.... so I just wasn't sure. But, finally after some more searching I found the French Standard and they have it listed as Marans... so yeah, that's definitely it. They are obviously not a well known chicken.

I had been using also as a "meter" when looking for hatching eggs. Not that someone who spells it wrong has bad chickens or is a bad breeder....... but, I too like to learn all I can about what it is that I am involved with, and I can't imagine breeding something and not knowing more about it.

While we're at it, Marans should be capitalized - it's a proper noun.

I actually e-mailed someone at Cackle and told them they had it spelled incorrectly. They sent me a nice e-mail and changed the spelling.

Well im probably wrong. But in my opinion. the breed is Maran. When referring to the breed or 1 chicken. Marans. when referring to 2 or more.

Think of other singular nouns ending with an "s". One walrus is not a "walru". One bus is not a "bu". One hippopotamus is not a "hippopotamu". One iris is not an "iri".
