Is it moral to eat meat? ***Constructive Discussion ONLY***

Vegans won't buy beeswax candles because it is exploiting the bees. They really take their no-animal-products theme very seriously.

Removing comments about vegans which are a little too flipant for my liking. Mod

Most vegans don't use leather. There are plenty of substitutes. My husband always buys vegan shoes. He doesn't use any leather at all, except for a belt that he's had since his pre-veg days. I try to buy used leather products--I have horses, no way around leather there.

I personally don't like wastefullness. If the animal is already gone for meat, I don't see any reason to waste the rest of the animal. But there are others out there who wouldn't touch any animal product. There are certainly varying degrees of veganism & vegetarianism, for sure.

I don't see any reason to take anything to extremes. If I had to make up a term for my family I'd like to think that we could be called something like "reasonable vegetarians"

We just try to be concious of where our food and the products we use come from. This also includes trying to buy U.S.-made products, avoiding sweatshop-made products, buying fair-trade goods when we can (coffee, sugar, bananas), etc. For us it is not simply about "not eating meat". It's about seeing the big picture.

This maybe a dumb question, but will they put cow manure on thier garden?

that's a very interesting question, I'd like to know too. I *think* that it may be exploiting the cow. Not being vegan, I don't know.

I have always had a really hard time wrapping my brain around the whole bee thing. Especially because bees are so critical to the environment and producing VEGGIES!!!

At least you have a good reason! the only vegan I've known IRL ate honey because "I don't like bees" she also worked in an ice cream shop?

There are also "raw fruitarians"-- assuming they only eat raw fruit.

I'll agree that you can eat healthy with a "reasonable vegetarian" type diet, but I just don't think one could be healthy with a strict vegan or "raw fruit" diet.

Something I've always wondered...

Why all the "fake meat" products? I mean, if you are going to be vegetarian, why eat something that pretends to be meat? I don't mean regular tofu, but fake dogs, burgers, sausage...

I try to feed my family real food, so we avoid the processed stuff anyhow.

I am a vegetarian[I eat fish, like some vegetarians do since IMO it isn't like eating a cow, and fish tastes better than beef to me anyhow, and I eat dairy and eggs, from MY chickeis and soon my goats]. But I am not a psyco one. There is nothing wrong with a beeswax candle people!! Are the bees being killed in the process? No! And 1/3 of all our veggies and fruit are pollinated by bees anyhow! Come on people! I am also a horse person, I do some showing and stuff too, and you absoulutley can't get into horse showing without leather! Yeah, I am really going to go in the show ring without a belt, a nylon bridle, a synthetic saddle, and rubber boot!! I have a sythetic junky saddle for everyday riding, but I certainly use my $1000 Circle Y leather and silver show saddle, leather boots, $150 leather show bridle, and a leather belt for a show!!!!!!!!!! I do eat an occasional ho-ho, which is fried in beef fat. I do eat McDonalds french fries. I do eat fried cheese sticks. I eat cheese, which contains rennet. Car tires are said to have beef fat in them. So I don't upset my mom, I will eat beef flavored rice which has the slightest bit of beef in it. There may be rules to vegetarianism, but not to living. [BTW, I would feel very bad about it, but if I ever saw a White Castle's, I would probably scarf down about 10 of them. That is the only meat worth eating I think, but there are none around here.]

It's really hard at first to break from the "meat entree, 2 veggie side dishes" mindset that most of us grew up with. So I think until you can break away from that, the meat substitutes can come in handy. It was hard at picnics when everybody's grilling burgers & hotdogs and you're sitting there with your potato salad, so a soy dog or veggie patty makes you feel like you're not left out. I never really liked that stuff and quit eating it one I learned to cook better, so now I go with marinated portabellas with goat cheese sprinkled on top for my grilled portion. Yum!
