Is it normal for a hen to protect a tom?

When my Lab, Sunny gets too close to William, his mate Katie chases the dog off. Is this some kind of role reversal, or is it typical for the girls to do this?

The hen can become protective of her mate sometimes. But you are right usually it is the rooster.
