Mine make several purring sounds that I do not thinks are really the same, at least to the chickens. One if from hen to chicks she is brooding, seems to be saying be quite. Another is made between flocks makes in close contact(dusting, roosting), seems to be saying I am here / friend. The last one is louder and higher in pitch and made when unwanted contact made, seems to be saying backoff.
Sound differs in respect to pitch, volume, trilling frequency and whether it is going up or down in pitch. Tembor / quality also varies.
