I have a flock of 14 hens about 5 months old. One has started laying for about a week now. Today I found a soft shelled egg in the coop. Is it normal at the beginning of laying for them to lay a soft shelled egg?

Yes. Also, they will lay smaller eggs at first. Eventually they will size up. My girls eat all the soft ones. Sometime the shells can be thin, and crack when another hen lays. The egg factory is working out the kinks, and will normally be running soon.
Baking tip: when using smaller eggs, just measure how much. One large egg equals 1/4 cup.
