I have acquired chickens on two separate occasions separated by two years. First was 2 pullets and second was one hen. All where games carrying an allele or two of interest to me. I know what to look for in terms of health issues. Most health issues can be spotted at a glance, but I insisted on handling all birds being considered. If an otherwise good looking bird had a parasite issue, then I would purchase said bird because I have proper quarantine capabilities and now how to eradicate parasites. Clearly, the overwhelming majority of the birds where not top notch, but there were some diamonds in the rough.
Apparently I look like someone that knows little about chickens. A range of assessments were given to my by sellers. Some of the sellers fibbed a bit. Others gave assessments I would find no fault with.
Of the pullets, one was eventually used for breeding and other culled. Hen was bred twice to produce 20 offspring that were reared to maturity. Quality of those offspring when bred to my line was crap so hen and her offspring were culled. Offspring of surviving pullet are sweet.

Some of the regular sellers at the flea market I would do business with in the future as I got know them outside the flea market.
Before doing a purchase at the flea market thing, go more than once to look at birds and talk to sellers.
What kind of rooster are you trying to find a spouse for?
