So it is freezing here, like a lot of other places. I was thinking of what I can do to help the chickens stay warm. I know I like a hot cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate to warm me up. What about the chickens? I feed them our leftovers as treats in addition to their layer pellets and a cup of scratch. Will it hurt them or help to warm their treats up in the micro a bit?

Just warm the leftovers and dump it in their feed tub which all of them can access to it. Do not use it into your gravity feeders. A rubber pan used for horses would be a good one to use and let them all dive in and get a piece of the "pie".

We've been in the single digits here overnight and in the a.m. It's not supposed to be this cold in the PNW

and my poor birds are in an unisulated (but heavily bedded) coop with no heat source.

Anyhow, I've been making them oatmeal in the morning and I do heat the leftovers up in the microwave for a before bed snack too. I've been doing what I call oatmeal stew. You start with a basic batch of plain oatmeal, add some of their feed and anything else that sounds good and you have on hand....scratch, fruit, yogurt, etc.
