Is it ok to paint the inside of the coop?

Hi ya'll, every one here gives such good advice and I was wondering, is it ok to paint the nest boxes and the rest of the inside of the coop. We are using Kilz Exterior semi gloss paint with primer in it, Help! we are fixing to start as soon as breakfast is over. Thanks

Mom told me not to when I was going to paint the inside of ours. DH did anyway, using latex paint. So far no chickens seem to mind...

The floor in my coop is made out of wood from an old bookshelf that was in my basement. It is painted and they seem to not have a problem with it. ( It is also covered with pine straw though) As long as they don't start picking it off and eating it i guess it'll be ok. Not sure it would hurt them if they did eat it, paint is not made out of lead anymore. (unless you are a Chinese toy maker)

Thanks, Countrygirl! I have to say that I do feel blessed to be in such a pretty place. I love looking at the mountains every day! We don't go to Cades Cove as often as we used to, but are in a hiking club that hikes all over the hills.

Good luck with the coop. Are you painting it to protect the wood? DH painted ours because we used treated wood and he thought the paint would be better than them eating bits of the wood if they pecked at it.

we are painting it because DH used partical board in making the coop and because it will look nicer. I don't know how people have gotten away with building their coops for next to nothigf but ours is running into a lot of money with the coop and run and still have to get feeders and waters and feed and the list goes on

I painted the entire inside of the coop using 1 coat of Kilz primer and then 2 coats of exterior semi gloss paint. The paint seals the wood and makes cleaning a lot easier. It also protects the wood against moisture damage. I can even hose down the inside of the coop. I also put rubber floor tiles over the wooden floor to protect it. The only bare wood in my coop are the roost. Hopefully the bright sunny color will help keep the girls laying through the winter. I kept the nest boxes darker since they seem to like darker areas to lay in.
