Is it ok to put hot hands in the turkey cage?

I hate to say this but I don't have a thermometer I thought I did but I lost it

thats ok just make sure they have an area where they can escape the heat if it gets uncomfortable

I'd lower the lamp a little bit more still. Like Runt of the Flock said just make sure they have a place to get out of the heat until you can find a thermometer.

Yikes, how many watts is the lamp? A normal heat lamp should be about 18" above a chick's head but i'm not sure with reptiles..

Lizard lamps are very similar to poultry. They actually tend to be a little safer with regards to holding the bulb and their wires, but concentrate the heat more. 7 inches is WAY too small though. That's tiny. There's no way that your lamp hold a bulb big enough and hot enough for the chicks though. I know. I have and have used both. Get a poultry lamp. Go to a tractor supply or feed store, not a pet shop.
