The guy at the feed store said it would be fine to start the chicks on grower feed. Our chicks will be layers. The food is a mash I beleive not pellets. I bought a bag today. Our chicks are on their way, may have them by tomorrow!

I get a custom mixed feed, but the gal I get it from said they start all their chicks on their "meatbuilder" ration (basically a grower feed) then at 3 months, they switch the layers to a "lay" ration!

I think the grower or meat builder rations usually have a higher protein content which the chicks need for growing.

Around here, the stores sell a single formula, different brands, called "starter/grower." You could research it, see how the feed's ingredients stack up to starter -- or just use it.

It is 16% protein. We're going to go ahead and use it.

Well, as long as it's chick food, you'll be OK. Once they get to 17 weeks old, then you want to switch to the layer feed. SIMPLE!
