Is it ok to use a egg a dead hen was sat on?

Yesterday i found one of my hens lieng dead in the nest box, she was lieng on a egg, will the egg be ok to use?

Well it depends, wouldn't it? Was the hen brooding? If she was, you probably wouldn't want to eat those eggs.... Because of baby chickens and all. But if she just happened to be standing over the eggs and died, making it look like she died sitting on them, then probably yes. Because those are just normal eggs.

She was defintley not broody and i just thaught it might not be bacause of all the germs, should i wash the egg?

Only if you are eating the shell.

Just crack it into a bowl and make sure it looks okay, then cook it thoroughly or bake with it - if there are any germs, complete cooking will deal with them.

If you just feel ooky about using it, scramble it up and feed it back to your chickens. And I am sorry for your loss. I know they just sometimes up and die, but I really dread finding one of my girls dead (it has happened once when I first got them) I cried for that poor chicken (Little Karla)

Thanks, i lost 4 hens last year 2 i found dead on their back in the feild, and one got caught by a stoat and the other got killed by a dog

Well, my 8 yo son just said "eww" then laughed.

I agree, crack it open into a separate bowl to not contaminate the other eggs you might be using (or recipe) and if it looks fine proceed to eat.

I found our turkey, Big Mama, dead in her nest box the other day. It was so sad. She was an old lady but still. So sorry for your loss.

Im so annoyed!!, one of my family members has just put the egg into the pile with the others! im never going to no which one it is now!

I wouldn't worry about it at all. Do you collect eggs on a regular basis? If so, then why would this egg not be ok?

Just wipe off all the eggs with a damp cloth before you crack them and don't worry about it.

well i had to miss a day so my uncle fed them so it will be 2 days old at the most

I wouldn't think twice about eating it. I don't always put my eggs in the fridge for 3 or 4 days after they are laid. And I don't use the AC so it's 85 in my house right now.
