Is it okay for an eggs to have blood on the outside?

Thanks... hopefully it’ll stop... we haven’t experienced any mites or lice.... at least I don’t think so. We clear their coop out weekly. I’m sure since we are still new we over do everything.

Wow! That’s super interesting. This morning there was one with a bleeding comb... but a 9 month old pullet. We have 14 girls in total. 5 that are 11 months, 3 that are 9 months, and 7 that are 6 months old. We are done and shouldn’t be adding an additions. There are 3 nesting boxes that are 12in by 15in. They often share and only use the outside boxes. The middle box even when they sit in there... they always lay in the outside boxes.

That looks like blood splashed/dripped from a wound elsewhere than the vent....
...like maybe a comb or foot got cut. If it came from the vent it would likely be smeared.

Did your younger birds just start laying?
How many nests and how many birds total?
Sometimes there is some pecking order stuff going on when pullets first start laying,
they can get bullied from the nests and could be and actually comb bite that caused the blood drop on the egg.

I thought they were completely unrelated. I thought she scratched her head on the fence. The egg was in the run so I guessed it was a new layer. The older girls were never confused about where to lay.

Minus one we had to rehome. I always forget... she was a he....

A comb can bleed pretty bad at first, but stops rather quickly, they often shake their head and fling it all over...can be alarming until you understand what's happening.

Generally if it's a vent issue the blood will be streaked vertically on the egg, so if you see that in the future, that's what that is. Glad you were able to find the source of the bleeding in this case!
