Is it okay to steal eggs from under a hen?

Roosters are illegal where I live (inside city limits) and there is no stinking way I would get one--too loud! My lot is probably 1/2 an acre, if that.

Oh, and as the OP, I was worried it might make the hen want to lay elsewhere if "predator" stole her egg while she was still on it. Sounds like it's not a big deal, so thanks, all! She didn't seem to mind at all when I took it.

You don't need one. If you want babies, you can always buy fertilized eggs.

It is fine to take the eggs from under the chicken. I have one that will stand up, let you take them, and sit back down and lay when she is ready.

We have one like that too, and one of the pullets will actually lay into your hand.

I do it, I have one BSL that would rather tear you apart then let you reach under her....but they all lay in the same box! Sometimes they will use the one next to it, but I will find 7 eggs in one box...they all wait in line to go into that box, so why did I build 4 of them?

I started gathering eggs from the chicken coop when I was 6 or 7 years old and I always reached under the hens to check for eggs. I don't think it upsets them. My hens get upset if I open up the coop when they are laying they seem to be shy about it. But they hop right up once they are done so I haven't had to reach under any since I got my own chickens this year.
