so was posting a pic of a very large egg on facebook and made a joke about it having a double yolk and twins.

has anyone ever hatched a super sized egg (that most likely was a double yolker)

is it possible for two chicks to pop out of one supersized egg???

It is very rare, but I did see a video of twins chicks hatched out of an egg....I believe it was from the UK. I guess, most eggs just wouldn't have the room for two chicks to develop. It's not impossible though.

Yup, quite possible. Several folks on this board have done it and will pipe up with their experiences, I hope. It *is* rare--usually, one or the other twin dies and without a way to eliminate the waste & bacteria from that death, the other one is soon to follow. Or they are unable to hatch. Or they just never develop.

But it does happen and yes, a double yolk does in fact indicate two embryos.

Shaver chickens have twins sometimes, the sheer size of their eggs is unbelievable. My shaver/leghorns once laid an egg that was a huge double (over 90 grams!...and I dropped it on the floor) and the red shavers have laid record eggs of up to 140 grams (!!!). But even then, a double yolk will sometimes yield only one chick, even in the monster egg-layers. If my shaver/leghorns ever lay another giant like that I'm going to incubate and document it.

and that would be neat to see it documented. would love to see it happen.
