This guinea was born with a bunch of others. He is much smaller and has very odd feathers. They curl! Is this something wrong, perhaps malnutrition? I have hatched 2 batches of guineas this year, and this is the only one with this issue. The pictures dont't really show the extent of how weird it is. The eggs were bought so I have no idea the lineage. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I can't get this photo inserted properly, hopefully this works.

I'm really half excited over a possible mutation, half nervous it is a sickness.

I had that with one of my Keets and it needed to be separated and given some warmth and electrolytes in it's water and make a mash of starter crumble and warm water. with more crumbles on top. Provide Grit and Chrushed Oyster shells. This is dehydration, not enough to kill it but make it less than ok. Watch it for a few days and it should be fine and go back with the others.

Good Luck!

What would cause dehydration when it has plenty of access to water? The others don't bully it. Could there be something underlying?

They are usually weaker keets to start with. Do they have plenty of room to get away from the heat lamp if need be? We put up a semi-shaded area for ours and it made a difference. It could just be that it is missing a nessasary mineral that the water doesn't have enough of. Like I said it is just for a few days. Our one had this twice. As a meet your's age about. and at about 5 months old. I saw her laying up against a wall next to the garage and she wasn't moving much and kept her eyes closed but the tell tale sign was the curled feathers. I was able to pick her up with no struggle and got her into a cool dark area and started the Sa-a-chick mix and the warm mash. She was bright eyed in a couple of hours and back in the coop before dark. The next day she was fine. Just keep a close eye on the keet or it could die. They overheat really fast. Maybe put the lamp higher.

Let me know how it does. Make sure you put it's beak in the new medicated water. to get it started off. Best of luck.
