*I included the latin names in the title because english is not my first language and I wanted to be sure I was talking about the right plants*

Lilacs and butterfly bushes are some of my favorite flowering bushes. I've always wanted some but never had space. Now I finally have some old bushes coming out and so I've got space for one new bush. And I can't decide!
So in a desperate attempt to have my cake and eat it too, I was wondering if it would be possible to graft lilacs tot butterfly bushes so I can have both of them in one!

I know grafting is usually only possible within "families" (not sure this is the right english word for it, sorry), but I don't know enough about either bush to know if they are compatible.

All your names are absolutely correct as far as I know!
I'm pretty sure that that wouldn't work. Apparently, they are in different families and you are correct in that plants need to be closely related to make grafting possible.
Maybe you could get dwarf ones or something so you could fit two bushes in?
(by the way, they are also two of my favorite bushes :))
